House Bill 510 on Oral Health Care in nursing homes is signed into law by Gov. Steve Beshear. Left to right at HB 510 signing in Governor's office, Bernie Vonderheide, Kentuckians for Nursing Home Reform; Rep. Carl Rollins, D-Midway, co-sponsor of the bill; Dr. Sharon Turner, dean of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry; Dr. John Sauk, dean of the University of Louisville Dental School; and Rep. Kelly Flood, D-Lexington, sponsor of the legislation. Rep. Flood worked especially hard to get the legislation past several political road-blocks. AND HERE'S THE GAL WHO MADE HB 510 POSSIBLE.... DR. PAM STEIN, public health specialist in the UK College of Dentistry, set up a pilot program in two Lexington nursing homes. That led to interest in the legislature in improving nursing home oral health and to HB 510 which will train nursing home staff to provide oral health care to residents statewide.
